Brian – Thanks for checking in. “Exceptional men” is a great way to describe the sailors, Marines and Officers who served aboard the USS Boston. My dad was also one of those “ordinary guys” who were called upon to do extra-ordinary things in a tough and frightening war. Except for the officers and some Old Salts, the ship was manned by a bunch of 18-20 year-olds.

My father Robert S. Galpin, S1c, USNR served aboard the USS Boston CAG 69 from the time she left San Franscico until the end of the war. he was 40 when the stork dropped by and I never had an appreciation until I became a US Army Officer. He was proud of his ship and felt it was his duty to serve. He passed away in 1999, only 67. He came home and lived the American Dream. Our fathers who fought the second World War did so out of love of country. Their Commanders must have been exceptional as theie men. They suffered no casualties in the fierce fighting. I’m so proud of my dad for the job he did. I hope you all who read this are too! Those were unordininarily terrible times fought by average Americans. Excuse me, very wonderfully dedicated Americans. God bless the Boston and all who called her home!
