MEN AT WORK 6

5-14-11

This picture, taken in mid January 1944 while the Boston was still in Pearl Harbor, shows R. Adm. Thebaud coming aboard to inspect the crew of his new command ship. He is seen here, over the 40mm gun turret, inspecting the detachment of Marines.   The camera is looking aft (rearward) on the starboard side of the ship.   Missing from the picture are the floatplanes, which would have been attached to the catapult cranes on the back of the ship.

All pictures in this series are from the National Archives, retrieved by Bill last year.

This one is for fans of the starboard side, Laurie.

We are looking aft (rear) on the starboard (right) side. This is the “fantail” section of the ship. In the upper left we see the pontoon fuselage of one of the ship’s “floatplanes”, in position on the catapult. In the lower right corner is one of the 8″ guns.   (This picture is also dated “14 Sept 43-45”)
