Biography
Charles Edward Lewis Sr. was born in Everett, MA, in March 1925, to John Henry Lewis and Mae Eliza Fogg. He grew up in Farmington, NH, where his family had a small family farm during The Great Depression. Charlie’s father was a Navy and Army vet of WWI. Charlie married Jennie Piraino in February, 1945. They had six children, two of which also served in the military. Charlie never talked much about his war experiences, like most of the vets of that time. When Mom died, we found his War records and a map showing all of the naval battles he was in, in the Pacific. He was in many key engagements on the USS Boston against the Japanese in the south Pacific islands; New Guinea, Marcus Islands, Wake Island, Guam, Rota, Iwo Jima and many more. He crossed the equator 9 Mar 1944 and participated in the solemn initiation ceremonies held by Neptunus Rex and his Royal Party. After the war, he became a union Pipefitter for about 40 years. He died in 1990 of lung cancer at the age of 65.
